Abstract : Pension reform is currently on the agenda of many national governments and parliaments in the European Union. While mass unemployment and sluggish economic growth have short-term effects on the balances of revenues and expenditures of pension schemes (as well as on social protection schemes in general), longer term structural problems are posed by the shifting demographic structure (the ageing process) in advanced societies and by increasing life expectancy. Changes in family structures and in patterns of labour force participation as well as in working time arrangements and working conditions create additional challenges. a comparative cross-national survey on the opinions and attitudes of EU citizens about pension issues was set up in 2001 to investigate their opinions.
