Abstract : It is natural for people to respond to longer lifespans, particularly longer healthy lifespans, by planning on longer working lives and other forms of social contribution. Four options are considered: a) raising the normal legal age of retirement, b) using international migration to ameliorate the economic effects of population ageing, with youthful poor country populations filling job vacancies in ageing countries, c) reforming health systems to reduce direct treatment costs and promote prevention and healthy life, d) rethinking business practices, employing employ older workers, even part-time, both in private and public sectors.
